We believe every person’s life has intrinsic value regardless of where they were born. Across our funds that focus on global health and development, we support work that improves the lives of the world’s poorest people — who often live on a few dollars a day and lack access to basic necessities like clean water, sanitation, or healthcare. The work we fund ranges from reliable, cost-effective interventions, like distributing medication, to more ambitious interventions like advocating for policy change to improve economic conditions.

Most of this fund’s spending supports organizations recommended by GiveWell, with whom we have a close relationship. GiveWell looks for opportunities with a strong evidence base, successful track record, and low risk of failure (relative to our usual hits-based giving approach). Its previous recommendations include charities working on:

  • Malaria control: distributing bednets and antimalarial medicine in high-prevalence areas.
  • Clean water access: providing in-line chlorination technology to rural villages.
  • Vaccination programs: supporting work to develop and distribute life-saving vaccines, and to help parents keep up with vaccination schedules.

This fund also makes more leveraged grants — higher risk, higher potential upside — in areas that fall outside of the scope of our other funds, including areas recommended by our cause prioritization researchers where we may want to launch a fund later. (We followed this process for our Global Growth Fund.)
