In May 2026, Coefficient Giving launched the Strep A Vaccine Fund, a multi-donor initiative to accelerate the development of Strep A vaccines. Our primary interest is preventing rheumatic heart disease (RHD), which disproportionately affects children and young adults in low- and middle-income countries, where access to antibiotics, treatment and surgical intervention remains limited.
The fund supports work across the vaccine development pipeline, from early science through to preparing for licensure, as well as immediate interventions to reduce RHD. To learn more about our strategy and the case for investing in Strep A, read our launch announcement.
We expect to spend a substantial proportion of our available funding on advancing multiple promising vaccine candidates through early clinical development, including the use of controlled human infection models (CHIMs).
We welcome expressions of interest for projects across the vaccine development pipeline that are aligned with our current funding priorities listed below (these may change over time), but they should have a plausible connection to reducing RHD, not only pharyngitis, impetigo, invasive disease, or other disease manifestations.
Our current funding priorities include work that aims to:
- Prepare for and conduct Phase 1 and CHIM clinical trials with a promising vaccine candidate
- Strengthen the scientific foundations for Strep A vaccine development, including:
- Epidemiology and immunology that informs clinical trial design (e.g. filling data gaps to establish clinical intermediates as plausible endpoints for Phase 2/3 efficacy trials, or informing the timing of vaccination)
- Developing or improving preclinical models and in vitro assays
- Develop next-generation vaccine candidates, including:
- Identifying new antigens
- Optimising immunogen design and delivery
- Prepare for regulatory approval, policy recommendations and delivery, including:
- Improving our understanding of disease burden in LMICs
- Defining clinical evaluation pathways
Submitting an expression of interest
We identify most funding opportunities through our own research and proactive outreach to potential grantees, but we also welcome expressions of interest (EOIs) via this form. We receive a large volume of inquiries, so we will only be able to respond to submissions that are a strong fit for our priorities. Historically, we have funded about 1–2% of the unsolicited proposals. For more information on our internal decision-making process, see here.
For funding opportunities beyond Strep A and RHD, see our funding criteria page of our Science and GHR&D Fund and other open calls.
