Introducing Our Managing Director of Philanthropic Advisory

We’re excited to share that Joe Huston has joined Coefficient Giving as our Managing Director of Philanthropic Advisory. In this role, Joe will lead our Partnerships team and our strategy for working with donors, overseeing the management of our multi-donor funds and the expansion of our bespoke advisory practice for major philanthropists. He joins our leadership team and is based in New York City.

About Joe

Before joining Coefficient Giving, Joe spent ten years at GiveDirectly, where he started in its Kenya field operation. He went on to serve in various capacities — Country Director, Regional Director, CFO — before stepping up as Managing Director in 2020.

During Joe’s tenure, GiveDirectly grew into one of the largest direct-giving organizations in the world, and has now delivered more than $1 billion to over two million people living in poverty. Along the way, he led the organization’s launch of the world’s largest and longest-running study of universal basic income — a $30 million project reaching more than 20,000 people across nearly 200 Kenyan villages — and helped implement one of the largest privately funded responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, delivering hundreds of millions of dollars to people in need in Sub-Saharan Africa and the U.S.

Before GiveDirectly, Joe spent four years at Bridgewater Associates. More recently, he held senior roles at Movement Labs, a political advocacy organization, and Garner Health, a healthcare data startup. He studied economics at Dartmouth College.

“I’ve admired the Coefficient Giving team’s work for over a decade, and I’m thrilled to expand its impact with new partners,” says Joe. “Philanthropists today have incredible opportunities to do good: Advances in AI pose unprecedented challenges, billions of farm animals endure unconscionable conditions, and 800 million people live on less than $3 a day. Since its founding, CG has seeded some of the most important responses to these and other problems, and by partnering with more donors, we can accelerate our progress towards a safer and more humane world.”

Alexander Berger, CEO of Coefficient Giving, adds, “I’m so excited that Joe is joining CG to lead our philanthropic advisory portfolio. We’ve always respected the team at GiveDirectly — much of which he helped build during his tenure there. Joe himself has been someone I’ve wanted to hire for many years, in part based on rave reviews from former colleagues. There’s a lot for CG to do to make the most of the third wave of philanthropy, and I’m glad Joe will be at the helm.”

What Joe will focus on

As Managing Director of Philanthropic Advisory, Joe will own our donor partnerships strategy beyond Good Ventures. That means deepening our work with donors who already give through our funds, and expanding our advisory practice, which offers tailored support — from strategy to due diligence to evaluation — to the next generation of major philanthropists looking for an ambitious thought partner.

We think the coming decade will see an extraordinary amount of new philanthropic capital looking for direction, and few people are better placed than Joe to help it land well. We’re so excited to have him on board
